Stories Passed Around the Table

Every course at our table used to come with a story attached, long before either was written down — why this dish only appears at a certain festa, whose recipe insisted on the extra hour, which argument an ancestor settled that no one else remembers now. We serve both together, story and course, passed around the table the way we grew up with them, in whatever order the evening calls for.
